GCGCNY Cell Plans

Becoming a Servant Like Jesus

This plan is designed to have a Nurturer guide the study, feel free to have other cell members support any of the sections as part of nurturing. All instructions are identified for Nurturer. A separate document (cell content) is meant to be shared.

This cell plan is based on the sermon shared on Sunday, October 27th, 2024.

Prepare Ahead

Opening

Nurturer: If there are new members today joining for the first time. Ask everyone to share their something about themselves.

  • Has it been a while since your cell has reviewed the cell vision statement? Review it together at: Cell Based Ministry

Icebreaker question: What was your most useful gift?

Worship

Go into musical worship if someone is scheduled. Continue to ask if members of the cell are willing to in the future.

Please pray for the group to begin the study.

Nurture: For those who would like to lot this portion of the night to something else feel free to use the prayer exercise:

Word

Philippians 2:5-11

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:

Who, being in very nature[a] God,
    did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature[b] of a servant,
    being made in human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a man,
    he humbled himself
    by becoming obedient to death—
        even death on a cross!

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.

Discussion

Nurturer: Review the sermon with the group and ask if there’s anything that stood out, then go through the discussion questions. Ask the following questions, the goal is to facilitate conversation, not a Q&A, this section doesn’t have to have everyone share their personal thoughts but try to get everyone in the conversation. In order to allow for deeper discussion, consider bring the groups up into smaller groups to allow more space for sharing.

Sermon/Teaching Summary
  • Jesus claims to be God, which was very controversial at the time.
  • Our relationship with each other should be modelled after Jesus’ mindset as a servant
  • The sin problem can only be solved by a sinful human
    • Jesus became a man as a perfect sacrifice to forgive our sins
    • Gave up heavenly glories to bring a blessing to us
    • Was Obedient to Loving Father’s will
  • To become a servant like Jesus:
    • Forgive others in the name of Jesus
    • Lose ourselves for the well-being of others
    • Obey Jesus as he is love
  • Reference passages:
    • Matthew 20: 25b-28
    • 2 Corinthians 5:21
    • 1 Peter 1:19
    • John 1:29
    • 2 Corinthians 8:9
    • John 10:10
    • John 12:24-26

Main Reflection & Response:

  1. When have you experienced/extended forgiveness
    • Follow up: How does that encounter help you understand Jesus’ forgiveness for us?
  2. In what ways have you sacrificed for others?
  3. Is there something that you feel God is calling you to right now?
    • Follow up: What barriers are present for you to be obedient to that calling?

Additional Questions:

  1. Who/what do you feel you are placing first in your life at this moment? (priorities)
  2. Is there anything that you are holding close to yourself that you can’t/want to give up? (things you grasp close to you rather than give up to God)
  3. How can we serve others this week? (individual, as a cell?)
  4. How can we obey God’s will for us this week? (self reflection?)
