This plan is designed to have a Nurturer guide the study, feel free to have other cell members support any of the sections as part of nurturing. All instructions are identified for Nurturer. A separate document (cell content) is meant to be shared.
This cell plan is based on the sermon shared on Sunday, November 24th, 2024.
Prepare Ahead
- Read Cell Vision Statement
- Meditate on 1 Peter 2:9-12
- Link to sharable version for members: Cell Content
Opening
Nurturer: If there are new members today joining for the first time ask everyone to share something about themselves.
- Note: Has it been a while since your cell has reviewed the cell vision statement? Review it together at: Cell Based Ministry
Icebreaker (Game): Guess Who?
- Game leader will give a series of physical attributes to describe members within the cell and the cell members are to guess who.
- example: My arms are toned… who am I?
- Members can be divided into teams of 3-4 for more engagement.
- Teams will need to decide who the mystery person is.
- If no teams guess correctly then game leader can share next clue.
- example: I have curly hair… who am I?
- Continue to share clues until someone guesses correctly. Clues should range from slightly obscure to obvious as more clues are shared about individual.
- Avoid clues that overlap several members (example: I have black hair).
Worship
Go into musical worship if someone is scheduled. Continue to ask if members of the cell are willing to lead this portion in the future.
Please pray for the group to begin the study.
Nurture: For those who would like to lot this portion of the night to something else feel free to use the prayer exercise:
- Prayer Exercise
- Lectio divina
Word
1 Peter 2:9-12
9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
11 Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. 12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.
Discussion
Nurturer: Review the sermon with the group and ask if there’s anything that stood out, then go through the discussion questions. Ask the following questions, the goal is to facilitate conversation, not a Q&A, this section doesn’t have to have everyone share their personal thoughts but try to get everyone in the conversation. In order to allow for deeper discussion, consider breaking the group up into smaller groups to allow more space for sharing.
Sermon/Teaching Summary
We tend to identify ourselves by attaching a lot of titles through our relationships, our jobs, our hobbies, or our community. We often forget that despite these earthly titles, only one title truly matters (God’s chosen people).
We were created for a purpose/mission. We are only able to achieve that goal if acknowledge and live in the reality of our God given identity.
- We are God’s chosen people, therefore:
- We belong to God (v.9a)
- We no longer live in darkness/sin (v.9b)
- We are a spiritual community (v.10a)
- We receive God’s mercy (v.10b)
- As a result of our new identity:
- We are special (living with a wholistic mindset of physical and spiritual).
- We live in the light of God’s truth and power (We have been and are being transformed).
- We are not alone (Together we share with others about the goodness of God).
- You have been saved!
Main Reflection & Response:
- How do people identify you? How do you identify yourself?
- Get into smaller groups and reflect on the below questions about our identity:
- Do you belong to God?
- Do you live in darkness/sin?
- Are you in a spiritual community?
- Have you received God’s mercy through the cross?
- How can you go forth and show your true identity off this week?
Additional Questions:
- Are there things that hold you back from embracing your true identity?
- Is there an actionable step to embracing your true self that you need support with?
