Word

Revelation 15

Seven Angels With Seven Plagues

15 I saw in heaven another great and marvelous sign: seven angels with the seven last plagues—last, because with them God’s wrath is completed. And I saw what looked like a sea of glass glowing with fire and, standing beside the sea, those who had been victorious over the beast and its image and over the number of its name. They held harps given them by God and sang the song of God’s servant Moses and of the Lamb:

“Great and marvelous are your deeds,
    Lord God Almighty.
Just and true are your ways,
    King of the nations.[a]
Who will not fear you, Lord,
and bring glory to your name?
For you alone are holy.
All nations will come
    and worship before you,
for your righteous acts have been revealed.”[b]

After this I looked, and I saw in heaven the temple—that is, the tabernacle of the covenant law—and it was opened. Out of the temple came the seven angels with the seven plagues. They were dressed in clean, shining linen and wore golden sashes around their chests. Then one of the four living creatures gave to the seven angels seven golden bowls filled with the wrath of God, who lives for ever and ever. And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from his power, and no one could enter the temple until the seven plagues of the seven angels were completed.

Reminders and Recommendations for Nurturers:
  • Spend some time in the sermon review to ensure the group has a grasp of the main point of the sermon
    • Ask if there’s anyone who wasn’t able to join, if there is, spend a bit of time to go through the sermon summary being going in to the review questions
    • If everyone was at the sermon, skip directly to the review questions
  • Review the questions ahead of time and decide which questions to ask your group. Typically, a good discussion will only be able to accommodate 2-3 questions for a meeting.
    • If being asked in a large group, invite others to join in and response if they have shared similar experiences or thoughts
    • Try to avoid from going around in a circle, as the nurturer, ask follow-up questions and avoid giving advice.
    • In order to allow for deeper discussion, consider breaking the group up into smaller groups to allow more space for sharing.
  • Reminder to leave space and time for prayer and witness

Sermon Review

  • Core themes:
    • Prelude & Preparation – God prepares His people before major events.
    • God’s Justice – His judgments are just because He is just.
    • Worship as Response – True worship responds to who God is and what He has done.
    • Biblical Authority – Our definition of justice must come from Scripture.
    • Identity as a Sign – Our lives point to something — ideally, to Christ.
  • Main Takeaway: Before revealing His most intense judgments, God reminds His people who He is: perfectly just. Because God is just, we can trust His ways — even when they are difficult to understand. As those redeemed by Him, our lives should become visible signs that point others to Christ.
  • Review Questions:
    • What preceded Chapter 15 and how does it compare to this chapter?

Discussion

  • Discussion Questions:
    • Introductory
      • The sermon described Revelation 15 as a “prelude.” What is something in your life that requires preparation before something big happens? Why is preparation important?
      • When you hear the word “justice,” what comes to mind? Where do you think most people today get their definition of justice?
    • Exploratory (4-6 people)
      • The sermon said worship is a response. How does understanding God’s character (especially His justice) change the way we worship?
    • Deep Dive (2-3 people)
      • If our understanding of justice must come from God’s Word, how intentional are you about shaping your thinking through Scripture rather than culture? What is one practical step you can take this week?
      • The sermon ended by saying we are signs that point to something. What does your life currently point to — career, comfort, reputation, Christ? What would need to change for your life to more clearly point to Jesus?
